Natural Medicines
Since earliest days, humans have used some kinds of medicines. We know this because hu- mans have survived .Ancient treatments for injury and disease were successful enough to keep hu- mans from dying out completely.
They were successful long before the time of modern medicine. Before the time of doctors with white coats and shiny(发亮的)instruments. Before the time of big hospitals with strange and wonderful equipment.
Many parts of the world still do not have university-educated doctors.Nor do they have ex-pensive hospitals.Yet injuries are treated. And diseases are often cured. How?By ancient meth- ods. By medicines that might seem mysterious, even magical(有魔力的).Traditional medicines are neither mysterious nor magical, however.
Through the centuries, tribal(部落的)medicine men experimented with plants. They found many useful chemicals in the plants. And scientists believe many of these traditional medicines may provide the cure for some of today's most serious diseases.
Experts say almost 80% of the people in the world use plants for health care. These natural medicines are used not just because people have no other form of treatment. They are used be-cause people trust them.In developed areas, few people think about the source of the medicines they buy in a store .Yet many widely-used medicines are from ancient sources, especially plants. Some experts say more than 25%of modern medicines come,in one way or another, from nature.
Scientists have long known that nature is really a chemical factory. All living things contain chemicals that help them survive. So scientists' interest in traditional medicine is not new.But it has become an urgent concern. This is because the earth's supply of natural medicines may be dropping rapidly.

It is believed by scientists that traditional medicines______.
A: can cure all kinds of diseases
B: may cure some of today's most serious diseases
C: are no longer useful for modem men
D: are too cheap to be useful

参考答案

参考解析
解析:第一段中“…successful enough to keep humans from dying out completely” (有效地使人类免于完全灭绝)与选项B“successful enough for humans to survive ”(有效地使人类生存下来)意思一样。

Egypt Felled by FamineEven ancient Egypt's mighty pyramid builders were powerless in the face of the famine that helped bring down their civilization around 2180 BC.Now evidence gleaned(搜集)from mud deposited by the River Nile suggests that a shift in climate thousands of kilometers to the south was ultimately to blame-and the same or worse could happen today. The ancient Egyptians depended on the Nile's annual floods to irrigate their crops. But any change in climate that pushed the African monsoons(季风)southwards out of Ethiopia would have diminished these floods.Dwindling(使减少)rains in the Ethiopian highlands would have meant fewer plants to establish the soil. When rain did fall it would have washed large amounts of soil into the Blue Nile and into Egypt, along with sediment(沉积物)from the White Nile. The Blue Nile mud has a different isotope(同位素)signature from that of the White Nile.So by analyzing isotope differences in mud deposited in the Nile Delta,Michael Krom of Leeds University worked out what proportion of sediment came from each branch of the river.Krom reasons that during periods of drought, the amount of the Blue Nile mud in the river would be relatively high.He found that one of these periods, from 4,500 to 4,200 years ago, immediately predated the fall of the Egypt's old Kingdom. The weakened waters would have been catastrophic for the Egyptians."Changes that affect food supply don't have to be very large to have a ripple effect in societies,"says Bill Ryan of the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory(天文台)in New York."Similar events today coald be even more devastating,"says team member Daniel Stanley,a geoarchaeologist from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.0."Anything humans do to shift the climate belts woulld have an even worse effect along the Nile system because the populations have increased dramatically."Why does the author mention"pyramid builders"?A:Because they once worked miracles.B:Because they were well-built.C:Because they were actually very weak.D:Because even they were unable to rescue their civilization.

考题 共用题干 第三篇People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.About 5,000 years ago,the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs there people used became a kind of alphabet. The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip stones. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But for Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.By the year 1000 BC,people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign,or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea and the Roman alphebet is now used all over the world. These days,we can write down a story,or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds:drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere:in books and newspapers,in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work.Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.Pictures of animals were painted on the walls of caves in France and Spain because______.A:the hunters wanted to see the picturesB:the painters were animal loversC:the painters wanted to show imaginationD:the pictures were thought to be helpful

考题 共用题干 Music Used as a Healing Therapy1 .Music has long been used to treat patients suffering from different problems. In 400 BC,its healing properties were documented by the ancient Greeks. More recently,in both world wars in the last century, medical workers used music therapy(疗法)with people suf-fering from trauma(外伤).Currently, it is used as a treatment for many diseases, such as cancer, and it has also been used with patients with long-term pain and learning disabilities.2 .There is growing evidence that music can caused physical changes to the body which can im-prove our health. In the Welcome Trust study, which took place over three years at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital in London, patients were asked to listen to musical perform-ances. As a result,it was found that stress levels were significantly reduced, recovery times were improved, and fewer drugs were needed.3. These very positive results are partly due to general well-being(良好的健康状况).It is already accepted that when people feel happy and have a positive approach to life, they are more likely to feel better and recover from disease quickly. Music increases this feeling of joy and adds to the recovery process.4 .However, not all these benefits can be attributed to an increase in general well-being. Music has other effects which have not yet been understood. According to Professor Robert-son,a scientist and musician, some effects of music are mysterious and are, therefore, being investigated further. It has been suggested that the sounds and rhythms of music help stimu-late the brain and send electrical messages to the muscles.5 .Science, however, demands facts and hard evidence. Many in the medical profession have not yet recognized the healing benefits of music, since reports have been based mainly on various stories of evidence. These new studies could provide proof to doctors that music is a suitable treatment for many conditions. One day doctors may even “prescribe”(开处方) music, but that could be a long time in the future. Those who always look on the bright side of life are more likely to______.A: recover from disease quicklyB: there is not enough hard evidenceC: use their minds activelyD: it improves general well-beingE: listen to musical performancesF: it brings many other benefits

考题 共用题干 Natural MedicinesSince earliest days, humans have used some kinds of medicines. We know this because humans have survived.Ancient treatments for injury and disease were successful enough to keep humans from dying out completely. They were successful long before the time of modern medicine. Before the time of doctors with white coats and shiny(发亮的)instruments. Before the time of big hospitals with strange and wonderful equipment. Many parts of the world still do not have university-educated doctors. Nor do they have expensive hospitals.Yet injuries are treated. And diseases are often cured. How?By ancient methods. By medicines that might seem mysterious , even magical(有魔力的).Traditional medicines are neither mysterious nor magical, however.Through the centuries , tribal(部落的)medicine men experimented with plants. They found many useful chemicals in the plants. And scientists believe many of these traditional medicines may provide the cure for some of today's most serious diseases.Experts say almost 80% of the people in the world use plants for health care. These natural medicines are used not just because people have no other form of treatment. They are used because people trust them. In developed areas, few people think about the source of the medicines they buy in a store .Yet many widely-used medicines are from ancient sources, especially plants. Some experts say more than 25%of modem medicines come,in one way or another, from nature.Scientists have long known that nature is really a chemical factory. All living things contain chemicals that help them survive .So scientists' interest in traditional medicine is not new.But it has become an urgent concern. This is because the earth's supply of natural medicines may be dropping rapidly. It is believed by scientists that traditional medicines______.A: can cure all kinds of diseasesB: may cure some of today's most serious diseasesC: are no longer useful for modern menD: are too cheap to be useful

考题 共用题干 第二篇Ancient Egypt Brought Down by FamineEven ancient Egypt's mighty pyramid(金字塔)builders were powerless in the face of the famine(饥荒)that helped bring down their civilization around 2180 BC.Now evidencecollected from mud deposited by the River Nile suggests that a shift in climate thousands of kilometers to the south was ultimately to blame一and the same or worse could happen today. The ancient Egyptians depended on the Nile's annual floods to irrigate their crops. But any change in climate that pushed the African monsoons(季风)southwards out of Ethiopia would have reduced these floods.Declining rains in the Ethiopian highlands would have meant fewer plants to stabilize the soil. When rain did fall it would have washed large amounts of soil into the Blue Nile and into Egypt, along with sediment(沉积)from the White Nile.Blue Nile mud has a different isotope(同位素)signature from that of the White Nile.So by analyzing isotope differences in mud deposited in the Nile Delta,Michael Krom of Leeds University worked out what proportion of sediment came from each branch of the river.Krom reasons that during periods of drought, the amount of Blue Nile mud in the river would be relatively high.He found that one of these periods, from 4500 to 4200 years ago, immediately came before the fall of the Egypt's Old Kingdom. The weakened waters would have been disaster for the Egyptians."Changes that affect food supply don't have to be very large to have a ripple(波浪)effect in societies."says Bill Ryan of the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in New York.Similar events today could be even more devastating, says team member Daniel Stanley,a scientist from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C,"Anything humans do to shift the climate belts would have an even worse effect along the Nile system today because the populations have increased dramatically."Why does the author mention"Egypt's mighty pyramid builders"?A:Because they once worked miracles.B:Because they were well-built.C:Because they were actually very weak.D:Because even they were unable to rescue their civilization.

考题 问答题Directions:In this part, there is one passage followed by a summary. Read the passage carefully and complete the summary with the appropriate words from the passage. Remember to write the answers on the Answer Sheet. Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage. Cosmetics have been used throughout history. The ancient Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Romans all used various kinds of makeup. Some of these cosmetics were used to improve their appearance. Others were used to protect their skin. But in some cases, things used for makeup were dangerous, or even deadly! Some of the first skin care treatments started in Egypt. In fact, Cleopatra was known to use them. She thought a bath in milk and honey left her skin silky smooth. Egyptians also developed some of the earliest sunscreens. They used oils and creams for protection against the sun and dry winds. Egyptian and other ancient cultures also used various powders on their skin for beauty. Egyptians used black kohl around their eyes. Romans put white chalk on their faces. And Indians painted red henna on their bodies. Most of the ancient cosmetic powders, oils, and creams were harmless. But in the name of beauty, some people applied dangerous chemicals and poisons to their skin. During the Italian Renaissance, women wore white powder made of lead on their faces. Of course, doctors now know lead is like a poison for our bodies. Also around the time of the Renaissance, women in Italy put drops of belladonna in their eyes. Belladonna is a very poisonous plant. The poison in the plant affects the nerves in the body. By putting belladonna drops in her eyes, a woman’s pupils would become very large. People thought this made her more beautiful. Actually, this is why the plant is called belladonna. In Italian, belladonna means “beautiful woman.” When Elizabeth I was queen of England in the late 1500s, some rather dangerous cosmetics were also used by women there. Women were using rouge made with mercury. They were also using special hair dye made with lead and sulphur. The dye was designed to give people red hair, the same color as the queen’s hair. Over time, the dye made people’s hair fall out. Finally, women using this dye ended up bald, like the queen, and had to wear wigs. Summary: Although people have used cosmetics throughout history, not all of them have been safe. In fact, some of them have been quite 1 to people. For example, long ago in Italian 2 , people thought women with big pupils were beautiful. Therefore, in the 3 of beauty, women began to put 4 of belladonna in their eyes to make their pupils larger. Today we know belladonna is poisonous, and it can affect the 5 in the body.
