考题 Wood carving refers to the art of creating or decorating objects of wood by carving with a sharp, hand-held tool. This form. of art has a history of over 1,000 years and a unique artistic style. The following is some introduction about wood carving in America.Wood carving began as a necessity in America and developed into an art. Because of the lack of other materials, early settlers were forced to make tools and utensils out of wood. At first, these articles were whittled with a knife, but when pioneer craftsmen set up their primitive shops most of them were fashioned on a lathe--a machine which holds an object and rotates it while it is being shaped by a tool. However, even after Massachusetts-born Thomas Blancard designed a lathe which could turn irregular shapes--an innovation that made possible mass production of gunstocks, shoe lasts, oblong and square wooden wares--craftsmen who could use knife and chisel skillfully were still in demand. Some found ready employment in shops of cabinetmakers, while others, carved decoy. Still others specialized in creating shop signs, ship figureheads, or in decorating interior woodwork. A few even accepted commissions to make busts of prominent citizens. This passage most likely came from a longer work about early American ______.A.arts and craftsB.political leadersC.logging industriesD.fashion design

考题 Between about 1910 and 1930, new artistic movements in European art were making themselves felt in the United States. American artists became acquainted with the new art on their trips to Paris and at the exhibitions in the famous New York gallery “291”( named after its address on Fifth Avenue) of the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. But most important in the spread of the modern movements in the United States was the sensational Armory Show of the 1913 held in New York, in which the works of many of the leading European artists were seen along with the works of a number of progressive American painters. Several of the American modernists who were influenced by the Armory Show found the urban landscape, especially New York, an appealing subject. Compared with the works of the realist painters, the works of American modernists were much further removed from the actual appearance of the city; they were more interested in the “feel “ of the city, more concerned with the meaning behind appearance. However, both the painters of the Ash Can School” and the later realists were still tied to nineteenth-century or earlier styles, while the early modernists shared in the international breakthroughs of the art of the twentieth century. The greatest of these breakthroughs was Cubism, developed most fully in France between 1907 and 1914, which brought about a major revolution in Western painting. It overturned the regional tradition that had been built upon since the Renaissance. In cubism, natural forms were broken down analytically into geometric shapes. No longer was a clear differentiation made between the figure and the background of a painting: the objects represented and the surface on which they were painted became one. The Cubists abandoned the conventional single vantage point of the viewer, and objects depicted from multiple viewpoints were shown at the same way.51.What’s the main topic of the passage?A. Modern art movements in the United States.B. The great influence of Cubism.C. Several American modernists found urban landscape an appealing subject.D. Contemporary artists in the United States.52.Which of the following is not mentioned as a means through which American artists learned about new movements?A. Trips to Paris.B. Works of many leading European artists as well as works of many progressive American painters.B. Works of all the European artists and American painters.C. Works of a number of American modernists and painters of the “Ash Can School”.D. Works of European artists only.54.According to the author, which of the following was a major new movement in twentieth-century art?A. Impressionism.B. Cubism.C. The rational tradition.D. Realism.55.What do we know about Cubism?A. It made a clear differentiation between the figure and the background of a painting.B. Natural forms were broken down analytically into shape of a square.C. 考题 共用题干 第三篇Listening Device Provides Early Landslide(山崩;地滑;塌方)WarningA device that provides early warning of a landslide by monitoring vibrations(振动)in soil is being tested by UK researchers. The device could save thousands of lives each year by warning when an area should be evacuated(疏散,撤走),the scientists say. Such natural disasters are common in countries that experience sudden , heavy rainfall(降雨,降雨量), and can also be triggered by earthquakes and even water erosion(腐蚀,侵蚀).Landslides start when a few particles of soil or rock within a slope start to move, but the early stages can be hard to spot.Following this initial movement,"slopes can become unstable in a matter of hours or minutes,"says Nell Dixon at Southborough University,UK. He says a warning system that monitors this movement"might be enough to evacuate a block of flats or clear a road, and save lives".The most common way to monitor a slope for signs of an imminent(即将发生的)landslide is to watch for changes in its shape. Surveyors can do this by measuring aside directly , or sensors(传感器)sunk into boreholes(钻孔,井眼)or fixed above ground can be used to monitor the shape of a slope. Slopes can, however, change shape without triggering a landslide,so either method is prone to causing false alarms. Now Dixon's team has developed a device that listens for the vibrations caused when particles begin moving within a slope. The device takes the form of a steel pipe dropped into a borehole in a slope. The borehole is filled in with gravel(砾,沙砾,砾石)around the pipe to help transmit high-frequency vibrations generated by particles within the slope. These vibrations pass up the tube and are picked up by a sensor on the surface.Softwareanalyses the vibration signal to determine whether a landslide niay be imminent. The device is currently being tested in a 6-metre-tall artificial clay embankment(堤岸)in Newcastle, UK. Early results suggest it should provide fewer false positives than existing systems.Once it has been carefully and thoroughly tested, the device could be used to create a complete early-warning system for dangerous slopes."Locations with a significant risk of landslides could definitely benefit from a machine like this,"says Adam Poulter,an expert at the British Red Cross,"As long as it doesn't cost too much."But,Poulter adds that an early-warning system may not be enough on its own."You need to have the human communication," he says,"Making systems that get warnings to those who need them can be difficult."Which of the following statements is true of landslides?A:The initial movement is hard to spot.B:They start with a movement of a few particles of soil or rock.C:They can be destructive in a matter of hours or minutes.D:All of the above.

考题 问答题Expressionism Expressionism is an art movement that produced a wealth of wonderful works of art, and the lives of the artists who created them were no less colorful and exciting. The word expressionism can be used to describe art from different times and places, most of them were part of a movement that took place in Germany from 1905 to 1920. They shared some of the beliefs. Those beliefs were that art should try to change society, to make it less conservative. It should express the energy of nature—following in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh—-and personal feeling rather than simply representing nature. It should feel uncomfortable, which means it should challenge the traditional ways of looking at the world. This differed from the opinion of Henri Matisse who believed that art should be comfortable. Expressionist art should be inspired by folk art, and the art of what were then called primitive people, for example from Africa. The aim of the Expressionists was to express personal feeling about what they were painting rather than representing it exactly as it was. It should have strong colors and shapes, be relatively direct, untutored and unplanned and should still contain recognizable things, but not be realistic. The lines could be distorted, and the colors could be strengthened or changed as in the art movement that began in 1905 called Fauvism. Expressionism was more than a style in painting. It could be found in theatre and cinema, literature and architecture. It was a sharing of ideas and experiences across all these media. The life stories of the Expressionist artists show just how much they had in common. Many began by studying applied art, such as furniture design, often to please their parents. Although they later made more personal art, they continued to make use of those technical skills. Both art critics and the public received this new movement with derision and outrage. Expressionist artists were trying to shock by challenging the traditional, conservative views held by many people. Gradually, however, it became accepted and even admired. All the Expressionists were affected by World War I (1914-18). Some fled from Germany and spent the war years in exile. Some never returned to their homeland. Most served in the war and some were killed. At first some of them hoped a war would change society for the better but they were soon disillusioned when they saw the destruction and suffering that it caused. In the years after the war, many Expressionist artist revealed the horrors they experienced in their work. After World War I, Expressionism became very fashionable in Germany, where art was allowed to flourish. This freedom ended in 1933 when Hitler declared all Expressionists were degenerate. This led to them being sacked from their jobs or forced to leave Germany. In 1937 the Nazis took thousands of art works from German museums and put them in an enormous exhibition called the Degenerate Art Exhibition, to show how bad and decadent this art was. It presented a view of the world that went against their political and cultural ambitions to rid Germany of all inferior races.
