考题 共用题干 第三篇The Changing Middle ClassThe United States perceives itself to be a middle一class nation. However, middle class is not a real desig- nation, nor does it carry privileges(特权).It is more of a perception, which probably was as true as it evercould be right after World War II.The economy was growing;more and more people owned their own homes; workers had solid contracts with the companies that employed them;and nearly everyone who wanted a higher education could have one.Successful people enjoyed upward social mobility. They might have started out poor, but they could become rich.Successful people also found that they had greater geographic mobility. In other words, they found themselves moving to and living in a variety of places. The middle class colleetively holds several values and principles. One strong value is the need to earn enough money to feel that one can determine one's own economic fate.In addition,middle-class morality(道 德观)embraces principles of individual responsibility, importance of family, obligations to others, and believing in something outside oneself. But in the 1990s those in the middle class found that there was a price for success. A U.S.Newslong commutes became routine;the need for child care put strains on the family;and public schools were not as good as they once were.Members of the middle class were no longer financing their lifestyles through earnings but were using credit to stay afloat. 考题 共用题干 第三篇Acceptance of Chronic IllnessHolding on to hope may not make patients happier as they deal with chronic illnesses or diseases. accorcting to a new study by University of Michigan Health System researchers."Hope is an important part of happiness,"said Peter A. Ubel, M. D. director of the U-M Center forBehavioral and Decision Sciences in Medicine and one of the authors of the happily hopeless study,"but there's a dark side of hope.Sometimes,if hope makes people put off getting on with their life,it can get in the way of happiness."The results showed that people do not adapt well to situations if they are believed to be short-term.Ubel and his co-authors一both from U-M and Carnegie Mellon University一studied patients who had new colostomies:their colons were removed and they had to have bowel movements in a pouch that lay outside their body.At the time they received their colostomy, some patients were told that the colostomy was reversible一that they would undergo a second operation to reconnect their bowels after several months.Others were told that the colostomy was permanent and that they would never have normal bowel function again. The second group一the one without hope一reported being happier over the next six months than those with reversible colostomies."We think they were happier because they got on with their life. They realized the cards they were dealt, and recognized that they had no choice but to play with those cards,"said Ubel, who is also a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine."The other group was waiting for their colostomy to be reversed,"he added."They contrasted their current life with the life they hoped to lead, and didn't make the best of their current situation.""Hopeful messages may not be in the best interests of the patient and may interfere with the patient's emotional adaptation,"Ubel said."I don't think we should take hope away. But I think we have to be careful about building up people's hope so much that they put off living their life."What had happened to the patients under study?A:They had just survived an accident.B:They had just had an operation.C:They had just injured their colons.D:They had just made some pouches.

考题 问答题Practice 6 A certain historical distance has always existed between the Asian region and the international organization. Most of New York’s energy is consumed by the Middle East and Africa, not Asia. The UN is Atlanticist in structure and sometimes in orientation. There have been several signs in recent years, however, of a quickening of interactions between the UN and Asia. First, the end of the cold war broke the superpower deadlock in the Security Council, conjured up new confidence about the organization’s place in international relations and was followed by the establishment of two of the UN’s largest and most complex peace operations, in Cambodia and East Timor. Second, the emergence of new and interconnected5 security threats in the region, including infectious diseases, resource scarcity, environmental catastrophes such as the 2004 tsunami, trafficking in drugs and people, and state failure, has demonstrated the advantages of international cooperation. As these threats escalate, so will the work of the UN and its agencies. Third, as the focus of international power moves towards them6, Asian states are stepping up their engagement with the world body. The top five contributors of peacekeeping personnel are all from the UN’s Asian regional group. Both Japan and India remain intent on permanent membership of the Security Council. Most striking of all is China’s increasingly practical behavior in New York. China was once poorly represented, defensive in the Council and uninterested in peacekeeping: now it is ably represented, confident and skillful in the chamber8 and before the media, and deploys more peacekeeping personnel than any other permanent member.
